Lukania G. Makunda has been with FSD Kenya since 2014 and currently leads the Market Information project. In this role, she works closely with public and private sector stakeholders across Kenya’s financial system to unlock the value of inclusive finance data by supporting the development of enabling infrastructure and processes. A strong advocate for sex-disaggregated data, Lukania also plays a key role in the FinAccess household survey, which she coordinates in partnership with the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), and other financial sector regulators. The survey provides key insights into the financial lives of low-income households and enterprises, helping to inform national policy and solutions development. She is also a key contributor to the development of Kenya’s forthcoming National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS).
With over 20 years of experience in research and impact tracking, Lukania has championed the use of data to advance inclusive finance and economic development — a core focus of FSD Kenya. The organisation’s work facilitates the bridging of gaps in inclusive finance across priority sectors such as health, agriculture, affordable housing, and green finance, with a particular emphasis on women and micro and small enterprises (MSEs).
Lukania holds a Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation of Development Programmes from the University of Nairobi’s Population Studies and Research Institute (PSRI) and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Kenyatta University. She is passionate about the power of data to influence change and advocates for simplicity in both life and work, believing that clarity and focus are key to meaningful impact.
