Marisela Alvarenga

Managing Director, Financial Institutions Division, IDB Invest, USA

With more than 20 years of experience in the private sector, banking and international organizations, Marisela Alvarenga is a strong advocate for inclusion and sustainability in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) while promoting innovation to contribute to development and impact across the financial sector. Today she is the Managing Director for the LAC financial sector at IDB Invest, where she is responsible for leading the commercial strategy and coverage of financial intermediaries (for example, banks, microfinance institutions, investment funds, fintechs, among others) throughout the region. She leads an interdisciplinary and multicultural team of professionals located both at headquarters in Washington, DC and throughout LAC through the IDB Group’s network of regional offices. She has led the structuring of financial instruments in the local and international capital markets, securitizations and corporate and structured financing and the expansion of financial services with foreign trade with a focus on green, social, gender and sustainable finance. Prior to joining the IDB Group, she was regional director of Corporate & Investment Banking Financial Planning at Citibank (based in El Salvador), where she served as lead financial director for that segment in Central America. Prior to that, she worked at Banco Cuscatlán as Corporate Finance Manager and Head of Financial Planning. Marisela has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Sciences from the Higher School of Economics and Business, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile complemented by an MBA program at the Otto Beisheim School of Management (WHU) in Germany, as well studies in Oxford, Cambridge on Impact Investing and Sustainable Finance.
