Habibur Rahman

Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh

Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman is a central banker and macroeconomist, currently holding the position of a Deputy Governor at Bangladesh Bank (BB), the central bank of Bangladesh. Since joining the bank as an Assistant Director in 1990, he has been associated with the bank, serving in various capacities, including the Chief Economist of the Bank. He was also appointed as a Senior Research Economist at the Policy Analysis Unit of BB, a World Bank-funded capacity development project. Dr. Rahman acts as a lead author of the Monetary Policy Statement (MPS), a publication stating the monetary policy stance along with a critical review of Bangladesh’s macro-financial outcome and outlook. He is also the chief editor and contributor of Bangladesh Bank Quarterly (BBQ) and the Monetary Policy Review (MPR) of the Bank. He is a Member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of BB. Dr. Rahman regularly reviews various journal articles published at home and abroad. He conducts sessions on various macroeconomic and policy issues at various professional training centers and academic institutions.

Dr. Rahman holds advanced degrees in economics, including a B.Sc. (Honors) and M.Sc. in Economics from Jahangirnagar University, as well as a Master’s in Economics and Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the Eastern Michigan and the Western Michigan University of the USA, respectively. He worked as a Research Associate at the W. E. Upjohn Institute of the USA. He has attended many national and international seminars, symposiums, workshops, and training programs, including the Japan – IMF Macroeconomic Seminar at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) of Japan, the Advanced workshop for the Central Bankers at Northwestern University of the USA, the Financial Programming and Policies (FPP) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Advanced Training Program at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in Bangladesh and the Fletcher School Leadership Program for Financial Inclusion at Tuft University in the USA. Dr. Rahman is an expert macroeconomist authoring many publications in various national and international journals.
